Leaving A Legacy

Concetta Lynch ~ Beloved Grandmother of Concetta Young

On December 1, 2009 at 2:15am my grandmother, Nanny, - the original Concetta - went home to be with the Lord. "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" she would always say - and this year she is with her precious Jesus for her favorite season.

Psalm 116:15 Amplified
Precious (important and no light matter) in the sight of the Lord is the death of one of His saints (His loved ones).
Nanny was the kind of grandmother you dream about...the Italian kind!!! She was the best cook, baker extraordinaire, master seamstress, quilter, crocheter, knitter...you name it she could do it and everything she put her hands to prospered. She had so much talent in those hands!

My Nanny had one little baby - her one claim to fame - my mother, Patricia Ann Lynch Harrison. Through that little girl came quite the legacy for my grandmother - 3 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and one tiny great-great-grand girl ready to be born any day. She was intimately involved in everyone of our lives and the moments we have spent with her are memories that we will treasure in our hearts forever.

Today is her birthday - December 26 - she would have been 92 years old. She was beautiful, bright, vibrant and full of life - even until she took her last breath she was radiant beyond comprehension. What a testimony she is for all of us!

Psalm 90:12
So teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Her "Celebration of Life" service was just magnificent. We witnessed the love her church family had for her and the impact she made in all of their lives. Her pastor read the most moving poem in her honor - and it truly touched each one of us.

The Dash Poemby Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
The cares, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard,
Are these things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Life we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash.

She loved the Word of God and she had such an intimate relationship with Him. Her favorite verse was Proverbs 3:5-6 and during these days of tears and the intense moments of missing her - I cling to this verse and rejoice that God is so full of mercy, goodness and lovingkindness.

Proverbs 3:5-6
Lean on, trust in, and be confident in the Lord with all your heart and mind and do not rely on your own understanding. In ALL your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.

I loved my grandmother beyond what words I could ever express or write. I was her namesake - the Little Concetta. What an honor. She was very affectionately known as the "Old Bat" and I was her "Little Bat". I could only hope to be half the woman she was - touch people like she did and love in her immeasurable capacity. I was blessed with the greatest gift for 43 years - the Nanny of my life.

  1. Today on my mother's birthday, I went into her room to sing her Happy Birthday. We were always spent from the business of the season. Her birthday always seemed like an after thought. Thinking about it, it was an after thought.
But what could be a better after thought than being one after the birth of JESUS....
As I was leaving her room I started to laugh, her room was a mess, they picked up her bed and her bedding was strewn all over the floor.
I laughed because I could hear her saying
"Can you believe that Bill, (my husband and her favorie person) throwing my stuff on the floor? He always makes such a mess, in the kithchen, in the garage, his shop, the shed, on and on and on.
MOM, I LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU SO.
HAPPY BIRTHDAAY, ENJOY YOUR PARTY IN HEAVEN.
Love, your daughter Patricia Lynch Harrison
(once and for all pronounced Pa-trish-a not
Pa-tree-sha as you all insist it is.)

  2. Beautiful, Concetta! And your grandmother is also beautiful. Where are her wrinkles? Does that mean you won't get wrinkles either? And to your mother, I always pronounced your name Pa-TRISH-a. Does that mean you have now forgiven me for being unable to identify lice?
    love to all,
    julie

Please!!! We did not make it up! Pa-Tree-sha is beautiful - I love your name!

    Jules,

  4. Julie,
For some reason the key fact to my post was omitted, probably Connie was behind that!
The key fact being MY MOTHER who named me told her how she pronounced it when she named me. That being Pa-trish-a. No matter who else mispronounces it, that doesn't change the fact that MY MOTHER who named me has the final word on the pronounciation!
Yes, our skin is impecable because of good genes, however Connie will age prematurely (she already has) because people who tend to alter the truth usually do.
    My skin is perfect......
    Love Pat

  6. The woman above which she denies knowlege of is the "Seeker of Truth" this is a foreign concept to her regarding family stories. The "fantasy" family scenerio's are also knoiwn as delusions, I try very hard not to rattle her because people who are delusional have to be handled gingerly as reality can cause a meltdown as you can see in her denial of knowing her own mother of 43 years. I rest my case!
